I've heard eggs can raise my cholesterol. Is that true?

Not really. It turns out that normal intake of dietary cholesterol from foods doesn't elevate blood cholesterol to a point of concern - saturated fat does - a fact of which many Americans are simply not aware. "The type of fat we eat, not cholesterol, is what is correlated with increased blood cholesterol levels," explains Anne VanBeber, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., associate professor and chair of the department of nutritional sciences at Texas Christian University...

Living on the Hundred-Mile Diet

Eating a truly local diet for a year poses some tricky questions. We were unable to find any locally grown grains-no more bread, pasta, or rice. The only starch left to us was the potato. Between us, we lost about 15 pounds in six weeks. While I appreciated the beauty and creativity of James' turnip sandwich, with big slabs of roasted turnip as the "bread," this innovation did little to stave off the constant hunger. James' jeans hung down his butt like a skater boy. He told me I had no butt left at all.

Outstanding in the Field.

So shoot me - I can never get in anyways. The 2006 season goes up March 1. Sign up while you can...

Michigan cereal lovers celebrate the 100th year of corn flakes from Battle Creek.

One hundred years ago this week in Battle Creek, Will Keith (W.K.) Kellogg introduced a new health food called Kellogg's Toasted Corn Flakes. Breakfast hasn't been the same since.

Don't laugh, I've got two.

Pressure Cooker 101: The boiling point of water at sea level is 212 degrees. A pressure cooker reduces cooking time by trapping the steam that escapes from boiling water, increasing the pressure on the liquid and raising its boiling point - and the maximum cooking temperature - to about 250 degrees (Adapted from "On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen," by Harold McGee/Scribner, 2004).

Truffle hunting...in Croatia?

Italy and France may be well known for their precious subterranean fungi, but Croatia has plenty, too...Within minutes, Reksi is pawing excitedly at the base of an oak. Ivica carries a rough entrenching tool with which he digs a few centimetres down. Hey presto! A soily white truffle the size of a gooseberry. He shoves it under Jane's nose. I think it's a fix, that he's hidden it in advance to buy us off. But, no; almost imediately Bobbi, the oldest dog, is sniffing and pawing and another fragrant forest diamond is unearthed. Ivica rewards each dog with a biscuit, and I start believing him when he says that this area is alive with white truffles.
