Saveur 10th Anniversary

Saveur Magazine 10th Anniversary Issue

09.12.04

Worth the price of admission. Ever since Dorothy Kalins teamed up with photographer Christopher Hirscheimer (just who is she anyways?) to bring us Saveur ten years ago, it's been our favorite food magazine. For the 10th Anniversary issue, Colman Andrews has assembled a who's who of the food world, for a little round table action:

(excerpt)

Saveur (Colman Andrews): "Judging from the kitchen tools we're buying today, do you think Americans in general are better cooks than they used to be"?

Chuck Williams: "I hate to say it, but I dont think so. I think one of the problems today is that there have been too many shortcuts introduced in cooking. when somebody learns to cook today, they are mostly learning shortcuts".

Darrel Corti: "They prepare food; they don't cook. Americans are always talking about saving time. I don't know what they do with all the time they save, however".

Mimi Sheraton: : "They watch cooking shows".

Richard Melman: "And they read cookbooks. I'm amazed every time I go into a bookstore that there are so many new ones".

Dorothy Kalins: "But how many good cookbooks are there? I get all the new ones that come into to Newsweek because I'm the resident food person from another life, and most of them I dont even want to open. I want to throw them across the room because they are so ludicrous..."

Mario Batali: "You're too cranky! Any cookbook that gets somebody to go to the store and buy something new and bring it home and cook is a good cookbook..."
